The Yakovlev Yak-38 was the Soviet naval aviation’s only operational VTOL attack fighter, as well as being the first fixed-wing aircraft operational on aircraft carriers. It was developed specifically for Kiev-class aircraft carriers (heavy aviation cruiser in the Russian classification) and served almost exclusively on them.
