The AK-47, officially known as the Kalashnikov, is a 7.62 × 39 mm gas assault rifle developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov around World War II. It is the original weapon in the Kalashnikov (or “AK”) family of rifles. The number 47 refers to the year in which it was devised.
